1916-1918

In 1917 Rewi left New Zealand by troop ship for France and after an eventful journey finally reached France in December 1917 after the Passchendaele battles. He was thrown into battle in the Somme and wounded in August 1918 during the final advance on Bapaume. For his part at Bapaume Rewi was awarded the Military Medal.

An organising body formed from representatives of twelve organisations to highlight the work and legacy of Rewi Alley and to hold commemorations during 2017 for the 120th Anniversary of his birth on 2nd December
