Rewi’s formative years growing up in a supportive family environment. His father, a school teacher, ensured that Rewi had a broad education while, at the same time, fostering an interest in the land. Besides being a strict disciplinarian, Rewi’s father believed that “children would learn by doing the natural way.” By advancing his age by six months, Rewi joined the army in 1916 and went to war.
